West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her concerns and criticized the Railway Ministry and the BJP regarding the recent Balasore train accident. She emphasized the need for assistance and questioned the absence of anti-collision devices. Banerjee also raised doubts about the accuracy of the reported death toll by the Railways.
Addressing the media, Banerjee questioned the lack of an anti-collision device and drew comparisons to the Godhra incident. She accused the BJP of tarnishing the image of former railway ministers and criticized them for not focusing on investigating the accident. The West Bengal CM revealed that 62 people had lost their lives in Bengal, and the number of unidentified victims remained at 182.
Banerjee highlighted the presence of IAS officers from Bengal on duty in Odisha, Kharagpur, and Midnapore, expressing concern for the welfare of those affected. She referred to the measures taken during her tenure, such as the implementation of a new signaling system and the installation of anti-collision devices and level crossings.
Criticizing the current government's efforts in the railways, Banerjee questioned the suitability of the Vande Bharat Express engine and alleged insufficient modernization during their tenure. She announced that the Bengal government would provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh to the seriously injured, and Rs 25,000 to those with minor injuries.
Banerjee expressed dismay at the alleged mistreatment of injured individuals, emphasizing the need for proper medical care. She urged for transparency in reporting the truth and demanded justice for the victims and their families. Banerjee highlighted the continuing challenges faced by over 1,000 patients admitted in Kolkata and other states.
